Diocese of Missouri
Trinity is a member of the Episcopal Diocese of Missouri. The office of the bishop, located in downtown St. Louis, is about five miles from our church home. It serves about 10,000 members throughout eastern and central Missouri, with the majority hailing from the St. Louis region. The diocese offers counsel on and resources for parish leadership, Covid protocols, architectural preservation, financial guidance, and safe and respectful inclusion of all. Although we are among the smaller parishes in the diocese, for the past two decades, Trinitarians have held seats on multiple diocesan governance committees, including the Commission on Ministry, Diocesan Council, Disciplinary Committee, and Standing Committee.
The diocese was founded in 1840 amidst deep sectional division around the country—and particularly in Missouri. The diocese helped the church navigate these turbulent times and expanded its social justice outreach throughout the 20th century. Ordained in 2002, George Wayne Smith helped lead the diocese through a turbulent era during which the church struggled with questions about gender and sexuality. His successor, Deon Kevin Johnson, consecrated in 2020 amidst the chaos of the Covid-19 pandemic, is the first Black, gay, immigrant bishop of the diocese. His energy and creativity have revitalized the diocese despite the difficulty and isolation of social distancing.
